After a long winter, the arrival of spring is a good excuse to plan a weekend out of the city. Across NSW, gardens are coming into bloom, walking trails are looking greener and country towns are shaking off the colder months, but you don’t need to travel far from Sydney to make the most of the season. Just a stone’s throw from Sydney, Leura offers one of the prettiest escapes in the state this time of year. The Blue Mountains town is known for its heritage streets, independent shops and thriving cafe scene, with spring bringing extra cheer in the form of cherry blossoms, lush gardens and seasonal flowers. From waterfalls and bushwalks to charming eateries and sweeping valley views, here’s how to make the most of Leura this spring.
How to spend a spring day in Leura

Spring is a particularly lovely time to explore Leura on foot, before venturing into the surrounding national park for more outdoor adventure. Start with a stroll along Leura Mall, the town’s chaming main street lined with heritage buildings, independent stores and cafes that sit beneath rows of cherry trees during spring. The glorious displays don’t last all season, so timing will depend on the weather, but they’re a picture-perfect sight around town when they arrive.
For a closer look at Leura’s celebrated garden culture, make your way to Everglades House & Gardens. The historic Art Deco property is perched among extensive landscaped grounds, with terraced lawns, established trees and seasonal plantings. Spring also brings the popular Leura Gardens Festival, returning from October 2–5 in 2026, with a collection of private gardens opening their gates to the public. Elsewhere around town, Bygone Beautys is a local favourite spot to visit, with an enormous collection of teapots, antiques, teas and teawares, along with traditional high tea or Devonshire tea offered in the Bygone Beautys Tearooms.
Leura’s location on the edge of the Blue Mountains National Park makes it an ideal spot to pair a morning around town with an afternoon outdoors. You don’t need to commit to a major hike: Elysian Rock and Olympian Rock offer spectacular Jamison Valley views after short walks, while Gordon Falls is another scenic stop close to town. For a longer adventure, the Grand Cliff Top Walk passes through Leura as it makes its way between Wentworth Falls and Katoomba, connecting bushland, waterfalls and some of the region’s best-known lookouts.
Where to eat and drink

There are plenty of quaint and quality eateries around town with much of the action concentrated around the main shopping strip. For breakfast or an early lunch, Lily’s Pad Cafe remains a popular local option, while Leura Gourmet has a dining area overlooking the valley — an appealing option if you want to make the most of the mountain scenery over a leisurely meal.
If you’re after something more substantial, The Leopard Leura occupies Leura’s century-old railway garage and shifts from focaccia, pasta and Italian-style dishes during the day to a cosy Italian-French bistro in the evening. For dinner, Polar Bear Of Leura is a staple for Mediterranean and Middle Eastern-inspired dishes, while Taqueria Arriba offers Mexican-Filipino flavours, and Jiggle Korean BBQ – Blue Mountains is the place to go if you’re in the mood for Korean barbecue.
And if your day trip turns into an overnight stay, finish the evening at Elysian Bar, a cosy cocktail bar where you can settle in for creative cocktails and share plates.
Where to shop
Leura is home to a variety of independent boutiques, gift stores and specialty shops occupying the village’s historic shopfronts. Stop by Megalong Books, an independent bookshop that has been part of Leura for around 40 years, or browse The Nook, a local makers’ co-op filled with handmade ceramics, jewellery, textiles and homewares.
For fashion, Zoe Clare stocks a curated mix of local and international labels, while Josophan’s Fine Chocolates remains a beloved local spot to pick up handmade chocolates and other sweet treats.
If you’re visiting later in spring, the Leura Village Fair returns in October, with market stalls taking over Leura Mall with handmade crafts, vintage finds, fashion, jewellery, plants and local produce.
Getting there
Leura is just over a 1.5-hour drive from Sydney and less than five minutes from neighbouring Katoomba. If you’d rather leave the car at home, Blue Mountains Line trains run directly from Central to Leura, with the journey taking around two hours. Plan your travels on Transport for NSW.
