Lord Howe Island has just been named the world’s best off-grid escape for 2026, reaffirming its status as one of Australia’s most extraordinary destinations. Set in the Tasman Sea and capped at just a few hundred visitors at any given time, the small but mighty island has long been celebrated for it’s clear turquoise waters, unspoilt landscapes, natural wonders and rare sense of seclusion, not too far from Sydney. Framed by ancient volcanic peaks and a thriving marine park, the year-round destination delivers a slow-travel experience that’s increasingly hard to find, with barely any crowds to contend with. From rainforest trails to pristine beaches, here are some of the best things to do in Lord Howe Island.
Things to do in Lord Howe Island

The island’s appeal is largely defined by its marine park, which contains the world’s southernmost coral reef. The protected environment allows for unique wildlife experiences with marine life and calm lagoon areas perfect for snorkelling. Ned’s Beach offers a vibrant kaleidoscope of fish and corals and a serene environment while Lagoon Beach boasts crystal clear waters and stunning coastal views.
On land, you’ll find a network of dazzling trails suited to different fitness levels and interests. The Seven Peaks Walk is the most comprehensive, yet rewarding, winding past sea cliffs, hidden swimming coves, dramatic sea cliffs, subtropical forests and the famous twin peaks — Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird. Keep an eye out for Ball’s Pyramid — the striking volcanic sea stack happens to be the tallest in the world and is visible from many vantage points on the walk. With no cars on the island, most visitors get around by bicycle, often ending the day at Blinky Beach for a surf or an easy stroll along the sand. The lack of traffic, paired with the 400-visitor cap, naturally sets a slower rhythm, complemented by yoga sessions and wellness treatments at the island’s lodges including Arajilla Retreat and Capella, reinforcing its appeal as the perfect off-grid, intimate escape.

The island’s recent ranking as the best off-grid destination for 2026 comes off the back of a global study by Goolets, that ranked 25 remote destinations based on their ability to deliver true disconnection. Lord Howe secured the top spot, placing ahead of traditional wilderness heavyweights like the Namib Desert and Greenland. The study weighed factors such as distance from airports, public transport and built-up infrastructure, confirming that the island offers a level of solitude and peace that is increasingly rare in modern travel.
Australia was the only country to secure two positions in the top ten, with South Australia’s Kangaroo Island placing sixth, thanks to its rugged coastline and abundant wildlife including sea lions, koalas and its namesake marsupials.
