Joe Hisaishi is a musical genius. Credited with creating the musical scores for all but one of Hiyao Miyazaki’s films, his talent brought even more magic, fantasy and feeling to already superb storytelling. This June at Sydney’s Supanova Comic Con & Gaming expo, you can drift off into an enchanting realm of his masterful melodies and other fantastic songs thanks to Candlelight and the Phoenix Collective String Quartet.
Prepare to relive iconic scenes from some of your favourite Studio Ghibli films with renditions of “Chihiro’s Waltz” from Spirited Away, “Path of the Wind” from My Neighbour Totoro, and “Carrying You” from Laputa: Castle in the Sky—all of which were composed by Joe Hisaishi.
Eight-time winner of the Japanese Academy Award for Best Music, Joe Hisaishi has crafted a style of music that is recognisable but not repetitive. Blending jazzy chords with more traditional structures, singable melodies and catchy rhythms, his musical scores have elevated the mystical and the wonder of all the films he has contributed to. But his music won’t be the only spellbinding sounds you’ll get to hear at this enchanting Candlelight performance.
Surrounded by hundreds of flickering candles, audiences will also be treated to reimaginings of “Always With Me” written by Wakako Kaku as well as the 1960s hit “Sukiyaki” by Japanese crooner Kyu Sakamoto, which appeared in From Up on Poppy Hill. The joy and intimacy of all of these songs will come to the fore with the range, dynamism and timbre that only a string quartet can deliver. Get ready to be Spirited Away.
Taking place at Sydney Olympic Park during the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming expo weekend, anime and pop culture fans will be able to experience the best of the exhibition during the day and stick around for a fantastically dreamy candlelit performance of The Best of Joe Hisaishi. It’s going to be the perfect way to cap off a spectacular day.
Please note that a Supanova ticket does not include entry into Candlelight: The Best of Joe Hisaishi.
The one-off Candlelight concert is on Saturday 18 June at 7:30pm.
